Anushka is exceptional, SRK is reborn, together they are winsome
A Imitiaz Ali film blended with SRK’s romantic ardor, Anushka’s effervescence and a pat from Karan Johar’s soul (maybe), results in Jab Harry Met Sejal.
This is a stereotype Imitiaz Ali film to some extent, which is a great thing. But then, it is not like his other films, and that we can’t decide if it’s a good thing or otherwise.
But we can say that majority of the film is fun, and it’s so because of Anushka.
Watch it If you like -
Watch it for Anushka because she is going to knock you down with her impressively fun role, Watch it if you are a fan of old-dipped-in-romance SRK
But Beware of -
The plot is unconvincing and dull in parts, The second half is weak and predictable
Read Detail Review
Written and directed by Imtiaz Ali, the film maker always, almost always embraces his love for Punjab and Western Europe.
That peculiar gleefulness of his films is because of this choice of locations and a realistic treatment that the director imparts. In this film though, that distinctness has an added Bollywood coat to it.
Alekh (Story) – Patkatha (Screenplay)
And it’s that Bollywood coat that didn’t quite complement a Imtiaz Ali film. in fact, we can call it the SRK touch, saccharine coated romance that feels good but not realistic. The same gets highlighted in the story and hence the script.
To be honest, the story around a finding-a-missing-ring-holiday isn’t that convincing. The screenplay around it is both bland and bubbles hand in hand, you enjoy one scene and feel disconnected in the other. ‘when Harry met Sejal’ i.e. the first half of the film is fun, quirky and likeable because of its unpredictability. It’s the second half i.e. ‘after Harry met Sejal’ that becomes dull, foreseeable and filmy.
Having said that, ‘third time’s a charm’ is one known quote and this fits here too.
SRK is reborn and seen in a good (if not wow) film after long, guess he owes it to his leading lady Anushka Sharma for the third time. While SRK forms the heart, Anushka is the spirit of the film and adds all the freshness, fun and extempore humor the film had. Then of course, the locales, the feel and the lead pair chemistry, these were the things that made the film naturally spellbinding.
Shah Rukh Khan as Harry, the actor is back to being a lover boy. Not that we didn’t like him when he experimented with Fan, but this is something that comes to him naturally. Or else we’d like to see him in roles like Chak De!
So, our famous Rahul turns Harry, and when has he ever not charmed us! Anushka Sharma as Sejal is a delight to watch, we know her as the spontaneous and all-natural actor, but here she did outdo herself. Her Gujarati lingo, her role, her act, is what makes this film lively and breezy.
And yes, we wish there was more supporting cast or more role for the supporting cast in the film. Supporting cast is what brightens the lead cast. Watching the leads throughout the film, this can be one added reason for the dull moments in the film.
Geet Sangeet (Music)
The music is good, but it’s the backdrop score of songs that sounds really nice. The Punjabi track that comes in the background for Shahrukh’s past in Punjab, we’d wish they’d release that too. Hawayein is one song that will cling onto you.
Nirnay (FilmyCurry Verdict)
What you seek is seeking you, well that depends what you seek in the film, SRK or Imitiaz Ali, because we can tell you that the latter is almost missing.
You will enter and see an unbelievably amazing Anushka and romance expert SRK.
