Shoojit Sircar has directed a couple of thriller and dramatic movies (Yahaan and Madras Cafe), but he is mainly known for his light-hearted movies like Vicky Donor and Piku. The filmmaker for the first time has tried his hands on directing a biopic.
Sardar Udham, a biopic on Sardar Udham Singh, has started streaming on Amazon Prime Video. You might have heard and read a line or two about Udham Singh in some books. But, Sircar has come up with a very detailed film about the revolutionary. However, while going into detailing the filmmaker forgot that he has to make a movie that keeps the audience engaged for those 2 hours 42 minutes.
The biggest problem with Sardar Udham is the runtime. It could have easily been trimmed by 30 minutes, especially in the first half. The movie gets better in the second half and that’s where it manages to impress us. The climax is fantastic and we are sure you will get emotional while watching it.
Vicky Kaushal gets into the skin of Sardar Udham perfectly. He delivers the best performance of his career. No won’t be surprised if he gets awards for this one. Amol Parashar as Shaheed Bhagat Singh leaves a mark and Banita Sandhu also impresses in her small role.
There’s no scope for music in the film, and Sircar has not even forcefully included any romantic tracks here and that’s good. However, the background score could have been better.
On the whole, Sardar Udham just turns out to be a decent film. But, we expected more from it.
