Kangana Ranaut’s multi-lingual film Thalaivii is all set to release in theatres on 10th September 2021. The movie is a biopic on late actress turned politician Jayalalithaa, and the trailer had impressed everyone a lot. But well, one should not judge a film by its trailer.

Thalaivii is about Jaya (Kangana) who is an actress in the Tamil film industry and is in a relationship with South star MGR (Arvind Swami). But, soon they part ways as the latter joins politics. After a few years, they meet again and MGR tells Jaya to join politics and then starts her journey to become the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.

When you make a biopic on one of the biggest names in the Indian film industry and politics, you have to showcase her journey in a fantastic way. But writer K. V. Vijayendra Prasad and director Vijay don’t do justice to the stature of Jayalalithaa with this movie.

The first half of the film is just totally dedicated to the love story between Jaya and MGR. There are many scenes that were not required and because of which first half looks very stretched. The movie gets better in the second half when it shifts to the political journey of Jayalalithaa. But in that too we wanted to see more.

Post interval, the scene that leaves an impact is MGR funeral sequence. It has been shot very well.

Kangana Ranaut has nailed it in her role of Jayalalithaa. It’s difficult to imagine any other actress in this role and we won’t be surprised if she gets awards for this one as well. Arvind Swami as MGR is fantastic, Bhagyashree and Madhoo are okay in their respective roles, and Raj Arjun is very good in his role.

The songs in the film are strictly, but it’s the background score that impresses us.

On the whole, Jayalalithaa deserved a better biopic, but if you are a Kangana Ranaut fan it’s a must watch for your.

Ratings: 2.5/5
